A Small Farm Needs Animals and Grains: The Real Difference From a Garden

Autumn is the beginning of my season. Most growers are wrapping up, but on this little hill in West Virginia the real work is just starting. I walk the whole place after a night of rain. Tomatoes and peppers are about done. The beds are full of sheet mulch. There are terraces that got overgrown, ponds that need to be dug wider so they actually catch the water coming off the hill, and a pond that blew out after an accident with the drain pipe. My plan for the cold months is to clear ground, sheet mulch, and get wheat and maslin (a rye and wheat mix) into as much of the open ground as I can. Then the camera died. I finished the video out anyway. The second half is a thought I've been turning over after a good conversation with a vegan gardener. He makes real points about producing fertility without animals. But on a subsistence scale, where you have to grow what you eat and you can't buy compost or cover crop seed or supplements, the math changes. There's the B12 problem. There's the difference between a garden that grows some of your potatoes and a farm that has to produce a complete diet. Grains are most of what a family eats, and a land constrained setup like this one needs the animals and the grain. Not because any of this is perfect. All of it is better than the industrial system. But there is a real difference between a permaculture food forest and having enough calories, protein, and vitamins on land you actually live on. I'm not claiming I have it all figured out. This is the honest version: what I'm building, why, and the parts I'm still working through. We live on about 0.8 acres of cleared land with 3.8 acres of woods behind it, and I'm trying to feed a family of seven from it. Subscribe if you want to watch me try.

@juliensueur@social.vivaldi.net Good point. Chicken breast alone is weak on B12, sure, that's true. But that's why a farm doesn't run on chicken breast: liver, eggs, dairy, and beef (Our neighbor as an agroecological beef operation, we will problem get a few highland cattle around year 6/8), cover B12 with room to spare. And you've got EPA/DHA backwards, the problem isn't fish, it's finding EPA/DHA without algae at all, because your body converts flax and chia poorly. Which is exactly why we're digging ponds for fish and prawns on the farm ,discussed in the next video that is taking FOREVER to upload. Algaes, chlorella, and Nori are the vegan answer and they're exactly the industrial systems you say you're trying to avoid. The landlocked answer to complete nutrition is the same one you half-gave yourself: you raise the fish and the animals, or you run the algae bioreactors and fortified supplements you don't want. We chose the pond.

Me Again ^^ I Have Got Serious Concerns as Well With EPA/DHA and Iodine...
How do i get my Complete Diet Without Eating Fish like Mackerel, Herring, Sardines or Taking Complements ?? Unfortunately, Chickens Meat is not Enough even if I Eat it Everyday! (which Requires Raising too much Chicken)...
But 2 Meals a Week with those Fishes are Enough for EPA/DHA, Iodine and B12...!
Other Options (Algaes, Chlorella, Nori..) are Way too Complicated for Growing ^^

@juliensueur@social.vivaldi.net Regarding insects, I would likely only grow them as feed for the birds. I've consider a black solider fly farm but not for our consumption unless there was some specific compelling reason to do so. I can see, drying, pulverizing and adding them to smoothies. I'm not against it, I just haven't really integrated anything like that yet. I'm mostly focused on increasing fertility and hand digging terraces. I've got a five year plan, after that I will free to research augmentation of the farm.

Another Interesting Video thanks ;) Yeah a Lot of Hypocrisy, Bullshits and GreenWashing EveryWhere, included in the Vegan and Permaculture Worlds as you Said. It is what it is...
I Really Appreciate your Model with Chickens and I am not Here to Tell you What to Do (Would be Quite the Opposite Actually..) Only Chatting.
Have you Ever Considered Raising Insects as Proteins and ElectroCulture?? 😅
